The New Buzz Word

We see it everywhere... Insurgent. Everyone is an insurgent. Terrorists are probably the most known to be insurgents, but now even Union Members are insurgents (H/T to Jane Galt, emphasis mine):

AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney, who is facing challenges from some of the labor federation's largest member unions, yesterday acknowledged that the organization is financially squeezed and may have to lay off a quarter of its workforce.

Sweeney, who was first elected in 1995 as an insurgent who promised to increase the percentage of the workforce represented by unions, has presided over a decade of union decline. Signs of the AFL-CIO's precarious financial condition could make Sweeney more vulnerable to challenges to his leadership at the federation's July convention in Chicago.

Of course there is also the irony as pointed out by Jane that the AFL-CIO of all organizations is going to lay people off... too bad they don't have a union to keep that from happening.

But why does that word belong there? I suppose it's natural. After all, practically anyone can be a terrorist these days (except the terrorists who are all insurgents). George Bush is a terrorist. If you talk to the nut case Pat Robertson, federal judges are even worse than terrorists (H/T to Little Green Footballs):

Federal judges are a more serious threat to America than Al Qaeda and the Sept. 11 terrorists, the Rev. Pat Robertson claimed yesterday.

"Over 100 years, I think the gradual erosion of the consensus that's held our country together is probably more serious than a few bearded terrorists who fly into buildings," Robertson said on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos."

Judges are worse than terrorists... terrorists are insurgents... union members are insurgents. Is there a word in existence any more that actually describes real life evil people? Are there any words left in our language that are truly reserved for only people that commit truly heinous acts?
