What Are You Afraid Of?

After all, it's not like you're breaking the law right?

Houston's police chief on Wednesday proposed placing surveillance cameras in apartment complexes, downtown streets, shopping malls and even private homes to fight crime during a shortage of police officers.

"I know a lot of people are concerned about Big Brother, but my response to that is, if you are not doing anything wrong, why should you worry about it?" Chief Harold Hurtt told reporters Wednesday at a regular briefing.

Next thing you know the chief will suggest arresting people for refusing voluntary searches of their homes. After all, only someone who was hiding criminal behavior would refuse. Someone mail this guy a copy of the Constitution, and be sure to highlight the 4th Amendment for him.

I'll have more thoughts on how technology may begin to create an overwhelming backlash against laws and regulations in a separate post. But for now, simply take a moment to marvel at how someone who shows utter contempt for basic civil liberties, is in charge of protecting them.

I have been meaning to post on the coming technology myself after reading Ray Kurzweil's "The Singularity Is Near."

We are on the knee of an expotential growth in technology so vast that it is going to shock just about everyone.

I fear science will be way ahead of legislation and society's ability to cope.
