The Mystery Alaska Incident

This is now famous between Nicole and I even though it happened a number of years ago. This is the reason why I rarely watch a movie for the first time with someone who has seen the movie before. I honestly don't rub it in... but it tends to come up when we go see movies together. Anyway... on to the story. I was hanging out at Nicole's and we decided to order a pizza and watch a movie. For whatever reason, we decided to just go through her collection and see what was there to watch, because we didn't feel like going to Blockbuster and figuring out what was good.

As always, there's a few movies that we enjoy watching, where we end up actually quoting the entire movie together. Princess Bride is a classic... "Inconceivable! You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." Then there's always Stripes... "Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it's usually something unusual." But then when she found out I'd never seen Mystery Alaska, it was as if I'd committed some sort of horrible crime. So it was decided... this problem had to be immediately fixed, and in went the movie.

If you've never seen it, it's about a small town in Alaska called Mystery, where the residents love hockey, and the local team ends up playing an NHL team in a publicity stunt on ESPN. I've you've never seen it, and think you might, then stop reading the post, because I'm going to spoil the ending for you.

Seriously... I'm going to spoil the ending. So if you're still reading this, you can't get upset.

Still with me? Alright. So at the end of the movie is the big game between the locals, and the NHL team. It's turned out to be a really great movie with good acting and a great story so far, and I'm really into it. The game is also really intense, and the local team is really holding their own despite all the odds against them. The adrenaline is pumping, the excitement is building... and you know that in a just a minute that last shot will which will determine who wins. I'm literally at the edge of my seat in anticipation. Then suddenly I hear...

Nicole: Just remember Nick, this is not a Disney movie.
Me: What?! Why did you say that? Jesus... you just killed the ending.
Nicole: No I didn't. I didn't say what was going to happen... just that its not a Disney movie.
Me: What else could that mean?! Now I know that he'll miss the last shot and the local guys are going to lose.

Sure enough... the last shot comes at the buzzer that could tie the game and... *clink*... the puck hits the bar and the locals lose the game. Granted it didn't turn out too bad for them after that. The NHL scouts there were so impressed by how they played that they took some of the locals with them with to try out in the big leagues. But the movie was ruined. So the rule was written... Never watch a movie you've never seen with someone who has seen it. And the phrase "This is not a Disney movie" came into special meaning in the vocabulary of our very good friendship.

Comments:

Odd, my first marriage turned out not to be a Disney movie.

Thanks for sharing.
