This is a Joke... Right?

Breaking News - Richard Gere elected as spokesman for entire planet:

JERUSALEM -- Actor Richard Gere has recorded a TV commercial urging Palestinians to vote in their election Sunday.

In a transcript obtained by The Associated Press, he said: "Hi, I'm Richard Gere, and I'm speaking for the entire world. We're with you during this election time. It's really important: Get out and vote."

Appearing with Gere in the spot are the head of the Islamic court in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and the spokesman for the Greek Orthodox Church in Jerusalem.

The spot is apparently an attempt to use both glamour and religion to get Palestinians to the polls. It will air soon. It's unclear what kind of sway Gere may have with Palestinians. One man who appeared with him in the spot said he'd never heard of Gere.

The ad will be aired on Palestinian TV and Arabic satellite channels in the next few days.

First of all, I don't think that Richard Gere asking Americans to vote in the U.S. election would get anyone to vote who normally wouldn't. You think that Palestinians are going to say "Well, I wasn't going to, but then Richard Gere said I should, so I changed my mind." Hell, they don't even know who he is! Talk about utter arrogance and ego! And who elected you spokesman for the entire world anyway? I didn't remember checking a box next to your name last November.

Thanks to Rachel Lucas for the heads up on this one. If you think I didn't like this... she has visions of small rodents going places inside him where the sun doesn't shine. Ouch.

OK, Who would you prefer?

Oh... I don't know... maybe an actualy Palestinian... someone who they know and respect to tell them get out and vote, instead of the Palestinian leaders telling them to boycot?

Maybe someone they actually recognize, and know the name of? Maybe someone who is not an American, since there is a pretty broad consensus among Palestinians that Americans don't have their interest at heart? And no matter how true or false that may be, since it is the general perception, plastering an American on their TV screens may not actually get them to do what the commcerial wants them to do?
