More on Real ID

Not giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. It seems like such a good idea. Personally... the whole concept kinda scares me. I think that this is opening up another Pandora's box for the federal government, and I don't want them to have any more options available to them. I just thought I'd reiterate my position after reading this article on the current state of the Real ID bill in Congress:

A bill that would require all states to verify federal immigration documents and birth certificates before issuing federally recognized drivers' licenses to its residents is still in limbo as Congress returns from its Easter recess and possibly toward a renewed push.
...
The act would prohibit anyone without a federally recognized state-issued ID from boarding an airplane or accessing federal programs that require federally recognized identification.
...
Jeff Lundgren, spokesman for the Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee, told FOXNews.com that Senate Republicans may attempt to attach a version of Real ID to a must-pass bill, like the upcoming war supplemental appropriations expected to come up in the Senate after the Easter recess.
...
"Drivers' licenses and state ID cards allow you to blend in and we've got these vulnerabilities," Lundgren said.
...
Proponents of the Sensenbrenner plan insist that the requirements are voluntary for states, and grants and bureaucratic assistance will be available for any state that participates. The goal is to plug the holes in the system, they say.

It's a voluntary plan? Read the bill again. If this is enacted, and your state doesn't improve it's license, you will not be able to fly, or take a train. The federal government will be restricting your freedom of movement within your own country.

Right now boarding a plane means you're checked against a terrorist watch list. What other watch lists will be available in the future? A tax debt watch list? A parking ticket watch list? A dead beat dad watch list? I fear the government having the infrastructure available to them to make these kinds of decisions. Hell... even now a terrorist watch list seems pretty useless if Ted Kennedy can find himself on one. Granted he's an ass... but he's no terrorist.

They say that people are allowed to blend in with a driver's license. How so? When was the last time you were "carded"? Hell... I rarely get carded any more when I go drinking. Does this mean that we'll get our ID's checked more often? Who will do the checking, and for what purposes? These sorts of things concern me. Don't kid yourselves folks... this is a National ID Card... with all the trappings of the things most people fear. The difference here is that it's distributed. Uncle Sam may not be handing them out, but he's got a hold of the reigns.

You can see my earlier comments on the matter after I talked to Sensenbrenner himself here.
