We Own You

So declares MoveOn.org to the Democratic Party. Here is the full story on Yahoo News. I'm not going to really go into this to deeply. What came to mind while reading his post was how close the far left came to winning the election with the phrase "The Wrong War, in the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time". Many people in the Democratic Party have criticized it as losing the election for John Kerry. However, the more I think about it, the more I think that without that phrase, they wouldn't have come as close to beating George Bush as they did.

It's really quite brilliant when you think about it. It's so brilliant because it's a phrase to catch two types of people. When someone who believes in "peace" at all cost heard that phrase, they thought No War, in No Place at No Time... ever. Immediately they thought, this is the candidate for me. When someone who believes that the Iraq war was a distraction from the real War on Terror heard that phrase, they thought Iraq was the wrong war, but we'll still go into other places and clean up if needed. They thought, this is the candidate for me.

The problem was that it was a difficult high wire act that they played with that phrase, and in the end one that Kerry couldn't manage. But I still have to think... it was an almost brilliant strategy. Unfortunately for MoveOn, come 2008, it's a strategy that won't work again. This was a one time shot shot requiring the set of circumstances... and in '08 you'll have to come up with something else. Owning the Democratic Party isn't going to get you anything, except another losing candidate. It's time to take your own name seriously.
