Remember Those Activist Judges?

Alright G.W. I voted for you, but that doesn't mean you're getting a free pass from me from now on. I'm going to call you on some the shit you do when I see it. That's our job as citizens, no matter who voted for you. Remember during the campaign you talked about stopping those "activist judges"? Come on now, it was only a week or two ago, you've got to remember. So what's up with this?:

The Bush administration asked the Supreme Court on Tuesday to block the nation's only law allowing doctors to help terminally ill patients die more quickly.

The appeal from Attorney General John Ashcroft had been expected since May, when a lower court ruled the federal government could not punish Oregon doctors who prescribed lethal doses of federally controlled drugs.

Oregon voters approved the law and since 1998 more than 170 people have used it to end their lives. Most had cancer.

The Bush administration has argued that assisted suicide is not a "legitimate medical purpose" and that doctors take an oath to heal patients, not help them die.

First of all, the Hippocratic Oath generally includes the phrase "do no harm", not anything about healing. Now we could debate whether ending the life of a terminally ill patient to save them from months of pain is doing harm or not until we're blue in the face. The point here is that the voters in Oregon have decided that this is a practice that they will permit. Personally I think it is an acceptable practice at that. Don't get activist judges involved George. It's called turnabout - and I know it sucks. If you don't want judges over turning bans on gay marriage, you don't get to ask them over turn laws allowing doctor assisted suicide.
