A Penny's Worth of Service?

From the "How Do You Explain This One?" files at work. The office building where I work has a cafeteria on the second floor, and adjacent to the cafeteria are several vending machines with 20 oz. soda bottles on sale for $1.25. The cafeteria right on the same floor sells the same 20 oz. bottles for $1.19 + tax, which totals $1.26.

Normally I buy it from the vending machine... but if I don't happen to have any singles or any quarters, then I go to the cafeteria. Granted, I take the extra penny from their "Take a penny, Leave a penny" tray... but still... why a penny more expensive?

I fill vending machines, and we've got them priced from 85 cents to $1.25, depending on location.
