Little Tiny Hairs, Growing Out Of My Face

If you've never listened to old Bill Cosby stand up from before he had his television show, then you're really missing out. Same goes for old Bob Newhart. As I run my hand over my face this morning, I'm reminded of the routine Cosby had on razors. Shaving and I don't mix too well. For years I used an electric razor because it was convenient, but was always unsatisfied with the result. It really was never close enough, and I would have to go over the same spot over and over again, even if I just bought fresh blades.

Lately I'd also been having a lot of issues with those damn ingrown hairs. It would seem I'm cursed with my father's beard. I hate admitting that I'm similar to him in any way, so you have no idea how hard it is to say that. That means that while most guys get 5 o'clock shadow, I get 1 o'clock shadow, or even 11 am shadow. I could probably have a pretty impressive beard going after only a few days of not shaving. I view that as good information to have if I need to suddenly go underground and change my identity.

So anyway, after a couple of weeks back on the old fashioned razor, I'm getting a closer shave, fewer ingrowns, and it takes me about the same amount of time, which surprised me. I've also delayed my shadow by about an hour. Not much, but any battle won is a victory I'll take.

I know that Gillette has a five bladed razor out, but me and my Mach 3 are doing just fine. I'm afraid that if I go to five blades, I'll end up like the ending line of Cosby's routine... "ripped to shreds".

  1. Me and my double bladed Gillette have been working great for years. And the blades are cheaper. As long as Gillette continues to make my blades, I have no desire to 'upgrade'

  2. Nick have you ever considered learning to shave with a straight razor? There are a lot of resources out there on straight razor shaving. And, it's also better for your skin since it exfoliates and leaves more of a "flat" finish to the hair instead of an \ angled cut that can cause the problems you're having.

(and it's gotta be the real deal, the disposables don't have the same...physics)

  3. Well... whenever I go to the barber (and yes, I go to an actual real barber... one of the few left), he uses a straight razor on me. Freaks me out every time, and I've been doing to him for years.

I feel like I'm about to get whacked. Seriously though... I'd be too freaked out that I'd slit my throat, or at the very least end up looking like a row of Japanese flags going into work.

  4. wait wait wait a sec.

    Who does the real shave?

I called everywhere in town for a friend of mine for his birthday.

Groom was the only place I could find and she used a disposable. Hacked his nose, too.
