Sensitive to those opposed to the Warriors nickname and unenthused by Golden Eagles, the Marquette University Board of Trustees on Wednesday moved in a new direction for the school's athletic teams.
Ladies and gentlemen . . . meet your Marquette Gold.
The surprise announcement was made by John F. Bergstrom, the chairman of the 38-member board of trustees, and university President Father Robert A. Wild, at a press conference at the Alumni Memorial Union.
Wild said the vote in favor of Gold was unanimous. The Gold will become official in July.
So is that the color, or the metal? And what is their mascot going to be? A gigantic gold ingot running around? It'll probably end up looking more like a block of cheese. Well, this is Wisconsin, maybe that's appropriate.
I have a feeling that when the said a decision was reached, most people thought it would either be to go back to the Warriors, or stick with the Golden Eagles. What were they thinking? If they were going to choose such a stupid name to "stop the controversy" over ditching Warriors ten years ago because they thought it was offensive, then just stick with Golden Eagles instead of picking something even dumber.
Don't think this will be the end of it. I give this name 5 years.
Update: I've given it some thought... and I think they should change their name to "The Knights of Ni". Their mascot could be a shrubbery. Just an idea.
Update II: Even better... this commenter at The Badger Blog Alliance has a new theme song... and it involves Sponge Bob Square Pants. Perfection!
Too funny! The school Hal did his study abroad through was called Beaver College

They changed the name due to the change in meaning of the term Beaver a few years back.
